Frequently asked questions
Is this General Anesthesia?
No. General Anesthesia (like in a hospital) requires a ventilator to breathe for you. IV Sedation is “Conscious Sedation” — you breathe on your own and maintain your reflexes, but you are so relaxed that you are unaware of the work being done.
Will I feel pain?
No. We still use local anesthetic to block pain at the tooth site, but we apply it after you are already sedated. You won’t care — and likely won’t remember — the injection.
Can I drive myself home?
Absolutely not. The medication stays in your system for several hours. You must have a responsible adult drive you to the appointment and stay with you for the rest of the day.
How long is the recovery?
You will feel sleepy for the rest of the day — most patients go home and nap. By the next morning the sedative effects are completely gone, and you can return to normal activities.
